Giovanni Di Miceli is born in Palermo, Italy, on 30 March 1882[1], the son of Antonino Di Miceli and Agnesa De Liberto.[2]
Research Notes: Giovanni's birth or baptism has not been found in Corleone or Palermo.[3][4]
According to his passport application in 1921, Giovanni immigrates on 12 November 1903.[1]
Giovanni marries twice, first at age 25 (b. 1882) in Manhattan, on 17 October 1907, to Giovannina Castro, who is also 25 years old and from Italy. She is the daughter of Antonino Castro and Luisa Marino, a couple from Corleone.[2]
Giovanni and Giovanna have at least three children: Antonino (1908), Morris (1912), and Agnes (c. 1920).[5]
Antonino is born 29 July 1908 in the Bronx.[6]
Giovanni may appear on the manifest of the SS Duca degli Adruzzi, sailing from Palermo on 8 December 1910, on line 23. He is 25 (b. 1885), a sailor, married, going to his mother in law, Luigia (her last name is illegible). He came to the US before, in 1906. He is joining his cousin, Gaetano Marino, at 83 Leonard St, in NY. He is 5'8" with a rosy complexion and chestnut hair.[7]
Morris is born 25 Feb 1912, based on the 1921 manifest.
Agnes is born around 1920, based on her reported age in the 1940 census.
Giovanni becomes a naturalized citizen on 10 December 1914 in New York City, according to his 1921 passport application.
Giovanna dies at the age of 39 in Manhattan in February 1921. She is survived by her husband, John Di Miceli. Her address is listed as 20 E. 111th, New York City.[8]
Two months later, Antonino and his sons sail to Palermo to visit his parents. The image attached to this profile is from the passport application, dated 11 April 1921.[9] According to this application, John is a Steamship Agent.[1]
It's not clear from the records whether infant Agnes goes with Giovanni and her brothers to Palermo for this visit. Because of her age, it's possible she is simply not listed: on the passport application, and on the return manifest. It's also possible Giovanni left her with relatives in New York. His late wife's family immigrated together, and she still has many family members in the city.
Giovanni and his sons appear on the manifest of the SS Providence five months later, returning from Palermo on 13 October 1921. Giovanni is 39 (b. 1882), a widower, and a naturalized citizen of the US, naturalized in New York in 1914. Antonino is 12, born 30 Aug 1909. Morris is 9, born 25 Feb 1912. (Record says 35 Feb.) They are returning to their home at 241 E 108th St, New York.[10]
John remarries to Bernardina by 1926, based on the age of their son in the 1940 census. Their marriage record has not been found. Cascio-10 23:44, 4 March 2017 (EST)
They have at least one child, Joseph (c. 1926).
John Di Miceli, age 57 (b. 1883), heads a household with his wife, Bernardina, 47 (b. 1893), daughter Agnes, 20 (b. 1920), and son Joseph, 14 (b. 1926). John and Bernardina were both born in Italy, and the children in New York. John owns a real estate business.[11] The address on his WWII Draft Registration Card matches the census block.
On John's WWII Draft Registration, his birth date and country are a match for previous records. John is now 60 years old and is self-employed in Real Estate. He lives at 805 Chestnut St. in the Bronx with his wife, Bernardina.[12]
Giovanni dies 15 April 1969.[5]
Agnes marries Joseph DeFillips, who dies 16 June 2000.[5]
